Many experts previously believed that emotion recognition was the root problem in eating disorders, but as more research is being developed, another possible root has emerged. They believe these disorders come from a comorbid condition. This condition creates a difficulty in understanding these emotions properly, which is generally associated with alexithymia, which is typically considered a personality trait. Many studies have supported the correlation between the lack of recognition and eating disorders, but they find Alexithymia to have the largest correlation.
After several studies, it was discovered that the emotional deficits weren’t causing eating disorders, but were just side effects, of alexithymia. More research will need to be done on alexithymia in order o find any differences from person to person, but overall, this has set up new critical assessments within clinical populations.
